Long gone are the days when a couple of static HTML pages sufficed as the web presence of the typical small business. A decade ago, the fact that you had any kind of web presence at all was a sign that you were at the cutting edge of turn-of-the-century business communication. Unfortunately, those original web sites quickly became stale, the information contained in them became out of date and, often, their design rapidly tired to the point of becoming embarrassing.

Unfortunately, as commercial web sites became more sophisticated, it became more and more difficult for smaller businesses to keep up. Maintaining a web site - originally a job for the enthusiastic hobbyist - became a skilled profession within an industry in its own right. The cost of keeping a contemporary web siteĀ  quickly moved out of the grasp of the cost-conscious small business, and all the time the expectations of customers were being driven forward by the big players. Many sites were abandoned or orphaned - here, for example is a shot (slightly obfuscated to protect the innocent) of a site that has not been touched since the turn of the century!
